The Naja inverted crescent symbol was adopted by the Navajo through contact with either the Spanish and/or the Plains Native Americans and used as a symbol for their horses. The Naja was put on the horse's headstall, the front center band of the horse bridle. Later, the Naja was used to adorn squash blossom necklaces.
